49ers Offensive Coordinator Rumors

Update:

Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reports that Steve Logan is expected to join the 49ers offensive coaching staff.

However, Maiocco adds that it isn’t known whether the 49ers are considering him for their offensive coordinator vacancy.

According to Albert Breer of NFL Media, Eagles WRs coach Bob Bicknell has come up as another potential option for their offensive coordinator job.

Quarterbacks coach Geep Chryst could be an in-house candidate for the job as well.

It appeared as though Rob Chudzinkski could end up running the 49ers’ offense next season, but he elected to re-sign with the Colts on Tuesday.

At this point in time, it’s really hard to get a read on where the 49ers coordinator search is headed, but we should have a much better idea in the next few days.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, Colts assistant Rob Chudzinkski appears to be the top candidate for the 49ers offensive coordinator vacancy.

The Colts initially blocked Chudzinkski from interviewing with the 49ers and Rams, but his contract is set to expire on Tuesday, which means Indianapolis won’t be able to prevent him from leaving at that point.

Maiocco mentions that the 49ers are believed to have discussed the position with former Redskins HC Mike Shanahan.

In the team were to look for an in-house candidate for the job, Maiocco suggests QBs coach Geep Chryst.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media is reporting that the 49ers are meeting with TEs coach Eric Mangini regarding their defensive coordinator vacancy.

———-

Ian Rapoport reports that the 49ers have requested permission to interview Colts assistant Rob Chudzinkski regarding their offensive coordinator vacancy.

Chudzinkski is a pretty popular guy right now as several teams are working to lock down coordinators. He reportedly has interest from the Rams, Ravens, Bears, and Rams.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Alabama OC Lane Kiffin is the “front-runner” for the 49ers offensive coordinator position.

  • Schefter adds that Colts special assistant Rob Chudzinkski is also being considered for the job as well.

Cam Inman of the Mercury News previously reported that Kiffin might consider a return to the NFL, and could be an option for the 49ers, if he were willing to leave his current position under Nick Saban.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, Colts special assistant Rob Chudzinkski is believed to be a “strong candidate” for the 49ers offensive coordinator position.

  • Jason La Canfora mentions that while there have been official overtures from the 49ers to Chudzinkski, he remains “well positioned” for their offensive coordinator position.

New HC Jim Tomsula recently indicated that they are considering someone who’s currently on a team that’s still alive in the playoffs.

“If there’s somebody that’s doing something really interesting (and) you know that’s it, but it’s tampering, so you don’t want to do that,” Tomsula said. “So you have to wait, and that’s just right. But then if there’s somebody else you can get right now, what do you do there? Do you hedge your bet?

The 49ers will have to wait until the Colts’ season concludes before they’ll have an opportunity to interview him.

Other candidates for the job include:

  • Former Redskins HC Mike Shanahan
  • Former Bears HC Marc Trestman
  • Charlie Weis

Dianna Marie Russini reports that former Redskins and Broncos HC Mike Shanahan is still in play for the 49ers offensive coordinator position.

  • Russini reported earlier in the day that Mike’s son, former Browns OC Kyle Shanahan, turned down an opportunity to interview for the 49ers offensive coordinator vacancy.

Shanahan previously interviewed for San Francisco’s head-coaching job before they promoted Jim Tomsula on Wednesday.

———-

According to John Middlekauff, Broncos OC Adam Gase will not be joining new 49ers HC Jim Tomsula’s coaching staff.

Meanwhile, Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area is hearing that Colts special assistant Rob Chudzinski is the “most likely” target for the 49ers offensive coordinator position.

Earlier in the day, Maiocco mentioned that former Bears HC Marc Trestman and Cowboys OL coach Bill Callahan could be options for San Francisco as well.

———–

The San Francisco have officially promoted DL coach Jim Tomsula to head coach and the expectation is that he will bring in Raiders DBs coach Jason Tarver as his defensive coordinator.

That leaves them with a number of options at offensive coordinator.

ESPN’s Adam Caplan is hearing that Colts assistant HC Rob Chudzinski and Charlie Weis could both be candidates for the job.

Meanwhile, Cam Inman spoke to a league source this week who mentioned that former Bears HC Marc Trestman could be on their radar for the offensive coordinator position.

Trestman has found plenty of interest since he was fired. Reports from earlier in the day mentioned that he is interviewing with the Browns Wednesday and that the Raiders could have interest in bringing him in.

We’ll have more updates posted here as the news is available.

  1. If these 3 were their top targets, I would go with Rob Chud. His resume working with Cam Newton, Andrew Luck, and Ken Dorsey, 4 Pro Bowl TE’s (Vernon could use that), and Clinton Portis, Frank Gore, and McGahee is very impressive. Putting him in a stable situation like ours would only benefit both parties and may influence Gore to come back, Vernon to take a cut to stay with us, and get the most out of our offensive line.
