49ers PK David Akers Losing Kicking Competition To Billy Cundiff?

Matt Maiocco of Comcast Sports Net reports that during 49ers practice today, PK David Akers made 16 of 21 field goals during warm-ups while fellow PK Billy Cundiff made 7 of 8.

The telling sign to me is the fact is he’s missing them wide left, which means he’s not getting his hips through the ball,” said former place kicker Joe Nedney. He’s not swinging confidently through the ball.

Maiocco adds that Cundiff displaying better leg strength than Akers, but also adds that Akers struggles could stem from a “double sports hernia” surgery that he underwent last February.

The fallout for Akers continues. He had a fantastic year in 2011, but he now finds himself fighting for a job while the team prepares for the playoff game. Akers just doesn’t seem to be very reliable from any distance and Cundiff appears to be in the driver’s seat at this point in time.
