49ers Place DB Jimmie Ward On PUP List

The San Francisco 49ers announced Friday that they’ve officially placed DB Jimmie Ward on the active/PUP list to open training camp.

The 49ers can activate him at any time from the list once he’s healthy and ready to practice.

Ward, 25, was taken with the No. 30 overall pick back in 2014. He’s currently in the final year of his four-year, $7.112 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $690,000 for the 2017 season.

The 49ers picked up Ward’s fifth-year option this past May, which will cost them $8,526,000 million for the 2018 season. Although, this figure is guaranteed only for injury and won’t prevent them from working on a long-term extension over the next year.

In 2016, Ward appeared in 11 games and recorded 54 tackles, one sack, an interception, a fumble recovery, a forced fumble and 12 pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 45 cornerback out of 111 qualifying players.
