49ers Plan On Discussing An Extension With HC Jim Harbaugh This Offseason

49ers owner Jed York told reporters on Thursday that he expects to extend HC Jim Harbaugh a formal offer contract extension this offseason.

Harbaugh mentioned that he “absolutely” wants to remain with the 49ers long-term, despite the rumors that have been circulating that he is one of the targets for the University of Texas’ head coaching search.

“I hope he has all the leverage in the world,” York said. “We kind of started to talk about a new contract last offseason after the Super Bowl, but it never got to the formal stage of making an offer. I think, rightfully so, Jim believes he has outperformed the original contract.”

The 49ers signed Harbaugh away from the Stanford with a five-year, $25 million contract back in 2011. He still has two years remaining on his contract, but the fact that he was able to turnaround the 49ers in a short period of time and has already led them to a Super Bowl, there is case to be made that he has already outperformed his current deal.

We’ll talk about something in the offseason that will put him in better position and we’ll see what he wants to do,” York said. “He does have two years left and he may decide to play it out and bet on himself. By the time the deal is done, maybe he’ll be worth $8 or $9 million a year because he has won a couple of Super Bowls. I sure hope that’s the case.
