49ers QB Thad Lewis Out For Season With Torn ACL

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that 49ers backup QB Thad Lewis suffered a torn ACL during Sunday’s preseason opener against the Texans and is now out for the season.

Lewis suffered the injury while scrambling to make a play in the third quarter of Sunday’s game.

The 49ers will likely place him on season-ending injured reserve in the coming days and add a player to their roster.

San Francisco’s depth chart at quarterback now consists of Blaine GabbertColin Kaepernick and rookie Jeff Driskel.

Lewis, 28, is a well traveled veteran who has played for a number of teams including the Rams, Browns, Lions, Bills, Texans and Eagles. He signed a one-year contract worth $760,000 with the 49ers as a free agent back in March that included $25,000 available through incentives.

Lewis last appeared in an NFL game while playing for the Bills in 2013. That year, he threw for 1,092 yards while completing 59.2 percent of his passes to go along with four touchdowns and three interceptions.
