49ers Release DL Ray McDonald

The San Francisco 49ers announced that they have terminated the contract of DL Ray McDonald.

GM Trent Baalke made the announcement during a Wednesday press conference.

Earlier in the day, the San Jose Police Department announced that McDonald was a suspect in an alleged rape.  There was enough evidence against McDonald to necessitate a search warrant on his home.

McDonald has a history of incidents, as earlier this year there were allegations of domestic violence against him.  The 49ers supported him throughout that period, but clearly there is a pattern here that the team could not overlook.

McDonald signed a five-year $20.1 million deal with the club back in 2011.

McDonald was performing at a high level.  Pro Football Focus ranked him as the No.11 3-4 defensive end.
