49ers Releasing QB Brian Hoyer

Adam Schefter reports that the 49ers are releasing veteran QB Brian Hoyer after they’ve reached a deal with the Patriots for backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo (NFLTR).

  • According to Ian Rapoport, Hoyer was initially included in the trade for Garoppolo but was removed for “comp pick reasons.

Speculation is already going around about Hoyer returning to the Patriots as Tom Brady‘s backup, so this will be something to keep an eye on in the coming days.

The 49ers will clearly move forward with Garoppolo and use the second half of the season to get him comfortable in Kyle Shanahan’s offensive system.

Hoyer, 32, originally signed on with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan State back in 2009. He spent three years in New England before bouncing around with a number of teams including the Steelers, Cardinals, Browns, Texans and Bears.

Hoyer signed a two-year, $12 million contract that included $10 million guaranteed with the 49ers this past March. He was set to make base salaries of $2.95 million and $3.95 million this year and next.

In 2017, Hoyer has appeared in six games for the 49ers and thrown for 1,245 yards while completing 58 percent of his passes to go along with four touchdowns and four interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 27 quarterback out of 34 qualifying players.
