49ers Restructure OLB Ahmad Brooks’ Contract, Free up $2M In Cap Room

Jason Fitzgerald of OverTheCap.com reports that the 49ers have restructured OLB Ahmad Brooks‘ contract and in turn created $2 million in available cap space.

  • Tom Pelissero reports that San Francisco converted $3.395 million of Brooks’ base salary into a signing bonus.
  • This move will drop Brooks cap figure for 2014 from $6.6 million to around $4.5 million, according to Pelissero.
  • However, move will subsequently increase his cap figures moving forward to: $9.6M (2015), $9.6M (2016) and $8.6M (2017).

Brooks, 30, has now played five seasons with the 49ers and has developed into a very good pass-rusher off the edge. Last year, he recorded 60 tackles, 8.5 sacks, an interception and a forced fumble over the course of 16 games.

Interestingly enough, Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 34 outside linebacker in a 3-4 system out of 42 qualifying players last season.

    • Good question.

According to PFF, Brooks has negative ratings as a pass-rusher, in coverage and for penalties, but was actually a decent run defender.
