49ers Sign Free Agent QB Josh Johnson

 

The San Francisco 49ers signed free agent QB Josh Johnson Wednesday, per Aaron Wilson.

Johnson, 27, was cut this week by the Bengals after playing for the Browns, 49ers and Buccaneers since entering the NFL back in 2009.

Johnson played for 49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh while at the University of San Diego.

It became quite clear that one of Jason Campbell or Johnson was going to be on the chopping block in Cincinnati after the Bengals selected Alabama QB A.J. McCarron in the fifth-round of this year’s draft.

Johnson could stick with San Francisco, who had a revolving door last season at the backup quarterback position.  San Francisco brought in QB Blaine Gabbert via trade, but Johnson will only need to beat out McLeod Bethel-Thompson and undrafted free agent Kory Faulkner if the 49ers elect to keep three quarterbacks.

Johnson has flashed some ability at times, but it appears as though no one sees him as anything more than a No. 3 quarterback at best.
