49ers Sticking With C.J. Beathard As Starting QB

Following Sunday’s loss to the Redskins, 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan announced that rookie C.J. Beathard is the team’s new starting quarterback, per Matt Barrows.

This probably isn’t much of a surprise, considering that Brian Hoyer has been largely ineffective this year and Beathard managed to bring the 49ers back and nearly give them a shot at winning the game.

For what it’s worth, Hoyer signed a two year, $12 million contract with the 49ers this offseason and San Francisco would pick up $4.5 million of cap space and take on $2 million of dead money next year by releasing him, according to OverTheCap.com.

Beathard, 23, was taken in the third-round of this year’s draft by the 49ers. He signed a four-year, $3.528 million contract and stands to make base salaries of $465,000 and $625,393 over the next two years of the agreement.

On Sunday, Beatheard completed 19 of 36 passing attempts for 245 yards, one touchdown and one interception for the 49ers. He also rushed for 14 yards.
