49ers TE Vernon Davis Intends To Hold Out For A New Contract

 

49ers TE Vernon Davis filled in for Peter King Monday morning over at MMQB.com and made it clear that he intends to hold out of mandatory minicamp in an attempt to secure a long-term contract.

“It’s all about getting paid what you deserve. It’s not that complicated,” Davis wrote.

This comes just a week after he mentioned in a radio interview with KGMZ-FM that he planned on being there, despite the talk of a possible holdout.

“You know what? I plan on being there,” Davis said, via CSN Bay Area. “I plan on being there.”

Davis is clearly focused on ensuring that he is taken care of financially, even if it comes at the cost of being ready for the 2014 season.

“I want the 49ers to win the Super Bowl, and I want to be on the field this summer working towards that goal, but I have to worry about my future first. Most of my teammates and many players in the NFL understand that. A few don’t,” Davis wrote.

“Behind closed doors, they’ll say they’re all about the team and would run through a brick wall for the organization. But when you look closer, they’re doing things to contradict themselves. I can’t listen to anyone but my family and my advisors, because those are the people who are going to be there when football inevitably dumps me.”

Davis, 30, signed a six-year, $42.705 million contract that included $23 million guaranteed. He has base salaries of $4.7 million and $4.35 million coming his way over the next two years.

Although OTAs are voluntary, Davis is sacrificing his annual $200,000 workout bonus by skipping them.

Last year, Davis caught 52 passes for 850 yards receiving and scored 13 touchdowns for the 49ers. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 7 tight end in the league.
