49ers TE Vernon Davis Skipping Workouts & Hoping To Get A New Contract

Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reports that 49ers TE Vernon Davis is not participating in voluntary workouts in the hope of securing a new contract.

  • Maiocco’s source mentioned that Davis is currently dissatisfied with his contract that has two years remaining.

Davis, 30, signed a six-year, $42.705 million contract that included $23 million guaranteed. He has base salaries of $4.7 million and $4.35 million coming his way over the next two years.

Although OTAs are voluntary, Davis is sacrificing his annual $200,000 workout bonus by skipping them.

Reports from earlier in the week mentioned that G Alex Boone was also unhappy with current contract and plans to skip workouts as well.

San Francisco is in a tough spot financially given that QB Colin Kaepernick, WR Michael Crabtree, G Mike Iupati and OLB Aldon Smith are all entering the final year of their respective contracts. Locking up Davis now seems extremely tough when you consider that they currently have $1.73 million in available cap space.

Last year, Davis caught 52 passes for 850 yards receiving and scored 13 touchdowns for the 49ers. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 7 tight end in the league.
