CSN Bay Area reports that the San Francisco 49ers are “probably” not willing to pay FS Dashon Goldson more than $7 million per year, citing a team source.
Goldson, an unsigned franchise player, is scheduled to earn $6.212 million in 2012 under his tender, but wants $8 million per year if he is to sign a long-term deal.
Secondary coach Ed Donatell is not too concerned with Goldson’s current situation. “This happens all over football,” Donatell said. “Nobody has a complete group. We have as complete as anybody. Anytime a guy can’t play, we look for the advantage to train another guy to give you a Plan B and C and so forth. But his (Goldson’s) history is, when he’s ready to go, he’s ready to go and he plays well.”
The 49ers have until July 16 to sign Goldson to a long-term contract, or else he will play under the tender next season. Goldson and first-round pick A.J. Jenkins are the team’s only unsigned players.
