49ers Waive QB Josh Johnson, Re-Sign WR Kassim Osgood

The San Francisco 49ers have placed QB Josh Johnson on waivers Friday and re-signed veteran WR Kassim Osgood, according to the NFL transactions release.

Johnson, 28, signed a one-year contract with the 49ers back in May, but has been Blaine Gabbert on their depth chart for several months. San Francisco re-signed him to their roster a few weeks ago, but it’s always hard to keep three quarterbacks on your active roster for the duration of the season.

Johnson appeared in two games last year while playing for the Bengals and received seven carries for 20 yards.

Osgood, 34, re-signed with the 49ers back in March, but he was unfortunately one of the team’s roster cuts over a month ago. San Francisco just released him a few days ago, but they said he could be brought back at some point in the near future.

He appeared in 14 games for the 49ers last season, but totaled just one reception for 17 yards last year while also contributing on special teams as well. Osgood has been active for four games this season, but has totaled just two punt return yards.
