49ers Waive RB Jarryd Hayne, Promote RB Kendall Gaskins

The San Francisco 49ers announced that they’ve placed preseason standout RB Jarryd Hayne on waivers Saturday and promoted RB Kendall Gaskins to their practice squad.

This comes as a bit of a surprise, especially with Carlos Hyde out for Week 8’s game, due to a foot injury.

It will be interesting to see if Hayne clears waivers, which would allow the 49ers to sign him to their practice squad.

Hayne, 27, signed a three-year contract that included $115,100 guaranteed with the 49ers back in March. He stands to make a base salary of $435,000 for the 2015 season.

This season, he’s appeared in six games and ran for 25 yards on eight carries (3.1 YPC) to go along with one reception for seven yards receiving. He has also contributed 76 kick return yards.

Gaskins, 24, originally signed with the Bills as an undrafted free agent out of Richmond back in 2013. He had brief stints with the Titans and Giants before signing to the 49ers’ practice squad in September of last year.

He later signed a reserve/future contract with San Francisco before being released at the start of the season. The 49ers later signed him to the practice squad the following day.
