49ers Worked Out 3 Players Including LB Donald Butler

Field Yates of ESPN reports that the 49ers brought in free agent LBs Sean Spence and Donald Butler for workouts with rookie LB Reuben Foster dealing with an ankle injury.

Butler, 28, is a former third-round pick of the Chargers back in 2010. He was entering the third year of his seven-year, $51.8 million contract when he was released by the Chargers last year.

The Cardinals signed him to a contract las year but he was, unfortunately, cut loose as they trimmed their roster down to 53 players coming out of the preseason. Butler later caught on with the Dolphins.

In 2015, Butler appeared in all 16 games for the Chargers and recorded 43 tackles, a half sack, a forced fumble and a recovery.

Spence, 27, is a former third-round pick of the Steelers back in 2012. He, unfortunately, sustained a serious knee injury early on his NFL career that wound up preventing him from appearing in a game until the 2014 season.

However, Spence was able to return and play pretty well for the Steelers before he departed and signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Titans last year. The Colts signed him a one-year, $2.5 million contract this past March only to cut him loose last week.

In 2016, Spence appeared in 15 games for the Titans and recorded 54 tackles, three sacks, a forced fumble and three pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 44 linebacker out of 87 qualifying players.
