Levi’s Stadium Could Also Be Home To The Raiders?

The San Francisco 49ers officially unveiled their brand new Levi’s Stadium on Thursday.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was in attendance for the event and suggested that the new facility could be a potential option for the Oakland Raiders, who happen to be dealing with stadium issues right now.

“They have to make that determination, whether they’re in a new stadium in Oakland or whether they feel that it’s best to join this stadium,” Goodell said, via the Bay Area Sports Guy. “We’re working on that, and that’s one of the decisions they’ll have to make.

Goodell and the league have backed the idea of the Raiders renting Levi’s Stadium from the 49ers. However, Raiders owner Markk Davis hasn’t shown much interest in a short-term loan that would allow them to host their home games in Santa Monica.

Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News mentioned that the NFL actually loaned the 49ers $200 million, and as part of the deal, ensured that they had the ability to pressure CEO Jed York to considering taking on the Raiders as tenants.

Phillip Matier and Andrew Ross of SFGate.com previously reported that the Raiders believe demolishing O.co Stadium is essential for their plans moving forward.

A new stadium has come up as an option, but early estimates suggest that the price could be close to $1 billion. Davis has said that the Raiders can put up $400 million of their own, but they would obviously need help in order to close the gap.

The Oakland Athletics are trying to negotiate a ten-year extension to retain the facility, but their lease includes a stipulation that would force them to move in two years if the Raiders wound up putting down a $10 million deposit on a new stadium.

There is a long way to go in regards to the Raiders options for a new home. We’ll have more on this topic as the news is available.
