A Breakdown Of A Possibly Osi Umenyiora Trade To Baltimore

Clark Judge of CBS Sports writes that the Baltimore Ravens should contact the New York Giants about possibly acquiring DE Osi Umenyiora now that Terrell Suggs figures to be out for a good majority of the 2012 season after partially tearing his Achilles tendon.

The Ravens were already in need of a pass rusher with Suggs on the team, so his loss leaves them in a very precarious situation. Jarret Johnson and Cory Redding are both gone as well, so someone like Sergio Kindle or possibly even second-round draft pick Courtney Upshaw will have to step up for them.

There’s been a lot of talk in recent weeks about Umenyiora being unhappy with his contract situation, so he seems like an obvious idea for them to consider. With that being said, there’s still plenty of obstacles for them to overcome, seeing as the Giants would have leverage in trade talks. Umenyiora’s under contract for a reasonable salary of $3.975 million next season, so they could ask for a pretty decent draft pick in return for him. Then there’s the question of whether or not Osi can play 3-4 linebacker for the Ravens. I honestly think he could do it, but it’s still a consideration. The last impeding factor is the fact the Ravens have limited cap space, and still have to address Ray Rice and Joe Flacco‘s contracts at some point.

All things considered, it would make sense for them to test the waters, but deals that come with these kind of obstacles in place rarely get done, but I’ll leave this up to you to decide.
