Aaron Maybin Signs With The Jets

The New York Jets have officially signed Maybin to a one-year deal.

I think he’s got some talent, some pass rush ability,” said Jets coach Rex Ryan. “We don’t need him to be a starter. We’ll see.

Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com reports that LB Aaron Maybin is on his way to New York to take a physical for the Jets. As long as he passes the physical, Maybin will sign with the team some time this afternoon.

It’s an interest move for the Jets as they’ve already cut one former first-round pick that wound up being a bust so the fact that they would be willing to take a chance on a similar player seems a little strange. But there’s a reason why these players were taken in the top ten picks and that’s because they possess enough talent to justify the risk. It will be interesting to see if Maybin can improve under Rex Ryan in the coming weeks.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the New York Jets have made an offer to Aaron Maybin. Mehta adds that five or six other teams have made similar offers to Maybin so we’ll have to see who emerges as the top suitor.

ESPN’s Jamie Walker suggest that the Cleveland Browns could be another team with interest in recently released LB Aaron Maybin.

Cleveland desperately needs depth at outside linebacker behind starters Scott Fujita and Chris Gocong. Maybin also had the ability to rush the passer in college, which is another element the Browns could use. Cleveland defensive coordinator Dick Jauron was the head coach in Buffalo when the Bills drafted Maybin No. 11 overall two years ago. Jauron has familiarity with Maybin. Perhaps the veteran coach can get something (anything?) out of the draft bust.”

The idea makes sense mainly because the Browns would have very little to lose by making this move. Jauron may still believe in Maybin’s ability but we’ll have to wait to see if Cleveland shows any interest in him.

The Chicago Tribune reports that sources have informed them that the Chicago Bears are considering recently released LB Aaron Maybin.

The Bears brought in Vernon Gholston last week so this would be their second draft bust signing in as many weeks. Maybin issue is that he’s undersized to play defensive end in the NFL, especially in a 4-3 defensive scheme. Chicago’s defensive front could end up being one of it’s strengths depending on how Vernon Gholston and Amobi Okoye fit in with players like Julius Peppers and Israel Idonije.
