AFC East Notes: Bills, Dolphins, Jets

Bills

The NFL announced Friday that their investigation into former Bills president Russ Brandon’s departure from the team has been closed.

“We are satisfied the club addressed the matter in a timely, thorough and appropriate manner,” the NFL said, via WIVB.com. “There will be no further action by the league office.”

Brandon resigned from his position after the Bills launched an internal investigation for workplace misconduct.

Dolphins

  • Dolphins DC Matt Burke said LB Raekwon McMillan was ready to “make that move” to a starting role last season before he suffered a season-ending ACL tear during Week 1 of the preseason. (Armando Salguero)
  • Salguero expects the Dolphins to use safeties Reshad Jones, T.J. McDonald, and Minkah Fitzpatrick on the field at the same time.
  • Burke mentioned that he intends to put the “best 11 players on the field,” and the three safeties could allow them to cover receivers, tight ends, and running backs: “It’s always good to have different weapons for me. And I know I mentioned this last year, the way offenses are going and even you look at some of the guys we drafted on offense — the tight end spot and running back spot, those sort of things — we’re going to put the best 11 players on the field from play-to-play, week-to-week, with our matchups.”

Jets

  • Rich Cimini writes that as soon as Jets HC deems first-round QB Sam Darnold to be ready, he will be the starting quarterback no matter how well Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater perform in the preseason.
  • As of now, Cimini puts the odds of Darnold opening the 2018 season as the Jets’ starter at 65 percent.
  • However, if the Jets choose to open the year with McCown, Cimini notes that the Jets schedule is tailor-made for breaking in a young quarterback after Week 4, given that they’ll have three consecutive home games.
  • Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Jets have hired former Texans director of college scouting Jon Carr as their director of college scouting.
