AFC Notes: Bengals, Broncos, Jaguars

Bengals

  • According to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com, Shawn Williams suffered a potentially serious injury that could leave him as a candidate to open the year on injured reserve and possibly be a return candidate later on in the year.
  • Jim Owczarski reports the fear is that Williams suffered a dislocated elbow during the game.
  • Based on video of the injury, David Chao believes Williams has an elbow dislocation with ulnar collateral ligament tear. The good news, however, is that Chao believes Williams could still play in Week 1 with a brace on his elbow.

Broncos

Broncos HC Vance Joseph said it would be “ideal” for the team to announce their starting quarterback this week, as it would allow their starters to get a full half against the Packers next week.

That would be ideal,” Joseph said, via Pro Football Talk. “Absolutely because our starters should play a half of football against Green Bay, and that’s going to be our first official game-planned game of the season. So that would be ideal, yes.”

Trevor Siemian has shown enough up to this point to be the favorite to open the season as the Broncos’ starter.

When asked if he felt he did enough to win the job, Siemian said: “I think so. I’m not a coach, but I think so.”

“Obviously my role has changed since I was drafted, coming in,” Siemian said, via Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post. “The one thing, obviously I’ve taken on more leadership and I think that’s natural as I get older. But I want to be myself the whole way through, too. As a leader, you have to be authentic, no matter what capacity. That’s what I’ve tried to do — be a good teammate and be the best guy I can be, be the best quarterback and go from there. … It sounds boring, but I really take it one day at a time, one rep at a time. I think, on my end, if I take care of my business everything will kind of shake out.”

Jaguars

Jaguars WR Marqise Lee said he thought he suffered a season-ending broken leg during practice last Sunday.

“It happened so fast,” Lee said, via Michael DiRocco of ESPN. “The next thing I remember, I just had a pain.

“The first time it actually happened, everything did flash by. And then as I sat there my whole time just was, ‘When is the pain going to go away?’”

Even so, Lee said he’s “pretty confident” he’ll be able to play in the team’s Sept. 10 season opener against the Texans.

“I’m pretty confident I’ll be fine,” Lee said. “I can’t make a move without the trainers and the coaches. It’s their decision, but I’m going to go ahead and jump in. I think I’ll be fine by Game 1. Doing everything possible to be ready by Game 1. That’s all I really can control, so I’m just going to do that.
