AFC Notes: Bills, Jets, Ravens

Bills

  • Jason La Canfora reports that the Bills considered benching QB Tyrod Taylor for weeks and it was born of several factors.
  • According to La Canfora, the Bills believe the offense was not going to evolve with Taylor, given his limitations in terms of reading the field and making plays within the confines of the pocket.
  • Beyond that, La Canfora says Taylor’s unwillingness to throw into tight windows or throw receivers open and a tendency to start halves slowly also factored into the decision to start Nathan Peterman.
  • Sources have told La Canfora that the Bills’ coaching staff and front office still think highly of Taylor and love his attitude and work ethic, but they felt they needed to make this change now.

Jets

  • Rich Cimini reports that Jets GM Mike Maccagnan, vice president of personnel Brian Heimerdinger and area scout Brian Shields were among several NFL reps in attendance for Saturday’s game between USC and UCLA, which featured top quarterback prospects Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen.
  • Rosen managed to outplay Darnold and impressed scouts with his arm talent, even though crucial mistakes were made by both teams.
  • Cimini believes it would be wise for the Jets to re-sign LB Demario Davis this offseason, given that he’s having a Pro Bowl-caliber season.
  • Cimini considers Josh McCown to be an “ideal mentor/bridge” option at quarterback for the Jets if they use a high pick on a quarterback.
  • While the Jets took a chance on TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Cimini expects him to be looking for the best deal in free agency and could command between $6-$7 million per year.
  • As for CB Morris Claiborne and DE Kony Ealy, Cimini says that the ideal situation for the Jets would be to retain both of them on one-year contracts.
  • The Jets traded for CB Rashard Robinson ahead of the deadline, but he has yet to play a snap for them. Jets HC Todd Bowles explained that he’s still learning their defensive scheme: “He has to learn the scheme. As a defensive back, there’s a lot of things to learn, mentally. You can’t just come in and play. There’s a lot that goes with it, and with him just getting here, he has to be in the system for a little bit before he gets on the field.”

Ravens

  • Ian Rapoport reports that the Ravens are demoting first-round and former starting WR Breshad Perriman.
  • According to Rapoport, this move could last just one week based on how Perriman responds.
