AFC Notes: Broncos, Colts, Ravens

Broncos

Broncos OLB Von Miller tells Pro Football Talk that “everything is good” between him and executive VP John Elway, despite Miller’s mom calling out Elway as being Denver’s issue.

“Everything is good. My mom, what makes her who she is, is her emotions. She’s never missed a football game I’ve played in my life, from little league to the National Football League. So when she heard what Mr. Elway said, I don’t think it was too harsh, but my mom took it the wrong way — I wouldn’t even say the wrong way, but she took it like she took it,” Miller said. “She’s my mom.”

Colts

When asked about the possibility of signing a player like Le’Veon Bell or Antonio Brown, Colts GM Chris Ballard explained that it is important to be wary of character concerns.

“First I can’t comment on either one,” said Ballard, via Kevin Bowen of 1070 TheFan. “But let me say this, it is important. I just think you are what you bring into your building. We have a great head coach. We have a great staff. But you make their jobs a lot harder and it’s a long season, and it shows up.

Although Ballard said that he would not be against adding a difference maker, anyone they sign must fit their culture” and put the team first.

“Am I against adding a player that is a difference maker on Sunday that I know is going to help us win games? No. I would absolutely add that player. He’s got to fit into our culture (though). He has to fit into doing things right. He has to fit in about being team first. He has to be accountable to his teammates. They have to fit that criteria. Are we going to be perfect doing it? No. I’m not perfect. And we are going to screw some things up and make some mistakes, but that’s one thing that we are going to error on the side of caution when it comes to who we add to our locker room.”

Ravens

Ravens GM Eric DeCosta referred to Ozzie Newsome’s new role with the team as similar to a “consigliere.”

“As far as Ozzie is concerned, people that know me really well know that I’ve probably seen ‘The Godfather’ 250 times, and I kind of go back to Michael [Corleone] and him having his father as his consigliere,” DeCosta said, via ESPN.com. “What an advantage he had to have the best in the business advising him day to day. And that’s what I think Ozzie can do with me. Who better to help me make decisions and to navigate than Ozzie Newsome?

“He probably will be here most of the time,” DeCosta added. “He loves this time of year. He loves the Senior Bowl, he loves the [NFL] combine. Is he going to be here in May? I don’t know. He’ll probably be golfing. Is he going to be here in training camp? I don’t know. Is he going to travel with the team? I really don’t know. But he’s really, really important.
