AFC Notes: Broncos, Ravens, Texans

Broncos

  • While some teams (Raiders & Texans) have already begun the process of restructuring their personnel departments, Mike Klis reports that the Broncos and executive VP John Elway will not be making any changes to their front office staff for the 2018-2019 season.

Ravens

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing multiple sources, reports that there was support within the Ravens’ draft room to take Louisville QB Lamar Jackson at No. 16 overall before Baltimore traded down twice with the Bills and Titans.

Even so, the Ravens still took TE Hayden Hurst at No. 25 overall before moving back in round one to get Jackson at No. 32 overall.

Ravens OC Marty Mornhinweg explained that the first thing for Jackson will be to ensure that he learns how to play quarterback like they expect him to.

The first thing, much like we did with Mike [Vick], is for him to … learn how to play the quarterback position like we play the quarterback position here,” Mornhinweg said, via NFL.com. “[Focusing on things like] footwork. Just how we go about the footwork — the base, wide-base, short-style, all those things that we’ll work on from Day 1, both pre-practice and post-practice.”

Mornhinweg stressed that Joe Flacco will remain the team’s starter with Jackson being a developmental open.

We talked about it just briefly on his visit about how we would go about these things,” Mornhinweg said. “So James [Urban] and myself and [coach] John [Harbaugh] plan together, pre-practice, all those things … It’s going to be important. As far as the future, we’ll see what happens there. Joe’s the quarterback of this football team. Lamar is going to develop all those things.

Texans

  • Neil Stratton reports that the Texans have released Director of College Scouting Jon Carr, Asst. Director of College Scouting Mike Martin, area scout Seth Turner and college scouting coordinator Matt Jansen and Asst. GM Jimmy Raye III.
  • According to Aaron Wilson, the Texans have also parted ways with scouting intern Rory Pommerening and administrative assistant in player personnel Lisa Andrzejewski.

  1. They need to correct Lamar Jackson’s footwork. Teach him how to use his feet and how to run properly. Which way to stand and turn, how many steps to take in his dropback, and how to remain stationary and not bounce up and down. In other words…the Ravens need to turn him into a Robot and screw up his natural ability!
