AFC Notes: Browns, Colts, Jaguars

Browns

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer confirms the report that the Browns have inquired (NFLTR) about free agent WR Jeremy Maclin.

Browns HC Hue Jackson sounded like he would be interested in the team bringing Maclin.

“I think that’s a good thing, if we did,’‘ Jackson told reporters. “I don’t know much about that, but to have an opportunity, one thing I know about our group is we’re going to continue to look at ways to improve our football team.

“I’ve said that numerous times, and I give (head of football operations) Sashi (Browns) a lot of credit for that. I think we’re always out there looking. If there’s a player available, then we’re going to take a peek at him and see if he can help our football team.”

Colts

  • Colts HC Chuck Pagano said that there’s currently no timetable for QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) to start throwing following the offseason shoulder surgery he had back in January. (Mike Wells)
  • Pagano said that WR T.Y. Hilton left practice early after he “tweaked something.” Hilton is getting checked out with a doctor but Mike Chappell says that it doesn’t appear to be a significant issue.

Jaguars

Jaguars executive VP Tom Coughlin said during an interview Rich Eisen that QB Blake Bortles has done a good job of correcting some of the flaws in his throwing motion this offseason.

Two years ago, he had an outstanding year, had a lot of yards, over 4,000 yards. I won’t say outstanding because the team didn’t do outstanding, but he certainly was much more productive.” Coughlin said. “This past year, a lack of production, if you will, turnovers, too many. And, so, he’s a talented young man. Had some flaws in his throwing motion that he did a nice job of working on in the offseason and pretty much correcting. So, we’ve seen some good things there.”

Coughlin also explained that they felt it was a “good business decision” to exercise Bortles’ fifth-year option, considering that it keeps their future options open.

“The whole thinking there is we thought it was a good business decision, a good decision for the club, a good decision for Blake and his team as well,” Coughlin said. “Obviously, we have very good business people here and the thought was it was a good move. It’s an opportunity for us to keep alive the various tags — the franchise tag, the transition tag — to utilize on other players if we need it. Also, the negotiating point would be from the option. So, we thought it was a good move.
