AFC Notes: Browns, Jaguars, Jets, Texans

Browns

While rookie DeShone Kizer had a strong showing in his first preseason game, Browns QBs coach David Lee stressed that there’s still a long ways to go for Kizer.

“He’s still not there,” Lee said, via ESPN.com. “He knows it.

“He’s trying and he’s doing better,” Lee said. “Has he got it mastered? Not yet. So we’ve got to know he can do all of it before we put him out there full-time. So he’s not ready for that yet.

Even so, Lee highlighted Kizer’s arm strength as one of his best attributes.

“He gives you big-play ability in the passing game at the quarterback position,” Lee said. “You guys saw it the other day, the two deep balls. He’s got a great long arm, but he can throw corner routes, post routes, skinny post on a line.

“He doesn’t limit you. You can throw whatever you want to because he’s got such great arm talent.”

Jaguars

  • Ian Rapoport reports that Jaguars WR Marqise Lee suffered a high-ankle sprain during practice this weekend.
  • According to Rapoport, Lee plans to “push hard” to be ready for Week 1, but the team could be cautious with him, which may delay his return a bit.

Jets

  • Manish Mehta reports that Jets backup S Doug Middleton suffered a torn pec during their recent preseason game and is expected to undergo surgery.

Texans

  • Texans signed rookie free agent WR Germone Hopper to a contract. (Mark Berman)
