AFC Notes: Chargers, Chiefs, Texans

Chargers OC Ken Whisenhunt mentioned that they could look to get RB Melvin Gordon more involved in the passing game this year.

“We can do some different things because Melvin has become such a good receiver out of the backfield,” Whisenhunt said, via ESPN.com. “And that’s not something that you saw from him in college. Not that he couldn’t do it; they just didn’t throw him the ball. He was too busy running for 8 million yards or whatever it was he was running for.”

Chiefs

Chiefs WR Chris Conley says he’s “pretty close” to being back to normal following the Achilles tear he suffered last year.

“I’m feeling really good,” Conley said, via Chiefs.com. “I think we found out that things are pretty close back to normal. I can do a lot of things out there and I can do them fast. The thing is just to not do too much volume. It’s been a long time working on this thing and getting it to the point where it is right now. We don’t want to rush it and get back. We’re being smart and thinking about the long haul.”

Texans

• John McClain of the Houston Chronicle writes that one situation worth watching for the Texans during their minicamp this week is whether CB Kareem Jackson gets more time at safety in the absence of Andre Hal, who was unfortunately diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
• McClain points out that the Texans currently have five healthy safeties so it’s possible they could consider signing a free agent such as Kenny Vaccaro, Tre Boston or Eric Reid.
• McClain believes it’s more likely that the Texans will have Jackson work at both cornerback and safety to maintain his versatility.
