AFC Notes: Chargers, Jets, Ravens

Chargers

  • The Los Angeles Chargers announced that they have hired former Bills WRs coach Phil McGeoghan to the same position, while they also named Rip Scherer TEs coach, Keith Burns as a special teams assistant, and Addison Lynch as a defensive quality control coach.

Jets

Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.com takes a look at some potential cap casualties for the Jets this offseason.

  • As of now, the Jets are projected to have around $75 million in salary cap space, which is plenty to work with. However, it’s possible that figure could increase up to $100 million, depending who they cut.
  • According to Vacchiano, the Jets are going to release DE Muhammad Wilkerson and the “only question” is if they will designate him as a pre- or post-June 1 cut. New York would recoup $11 million of cap room by cutting him outright and $17 million if they wait until June 1 for the cap benefits.
  • Some other notable roster cuts to watch for the Jets, according to Vacchiano, include CB Buster Skrine ($6M), RB Matt Forte ($3M), G James Carpenter ($4.7M), OL Ben Ijalana ($4.6M), DT Steve McLendon ($3.375M), WR/KR Devin Smith ($1,235,784) and WR Jermaine Kearse ($5M).

Ravens

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti believes the loss of some of their veteran scouts has affected the team in recent years when it comes to player evaluation.

When we lost those scouts, we didn’t necessarily go out and hire equal scouts to replace them, and I think that was a mistake,” Bisciotti said, via ESPN.com. “I think that, in retrospect, you can say that you can’t lose those three scouts with 30 years of experience between the three of them and then hire 25-year-olds that are ready to give it the old try. … I think that it shows that we have not done a very good job of filling in senior people with senior people. That’s something we are going to address starting right now and hopefully rebuild that on the fly, because we can’t wait for 25-year-olds to get as good as [former Ravens scout and current Eagles vice president of player personnel] Joe Douglas was at 36.”
