AFC Notes: Chiefs, Ravens, Titans

Chiefs

Chiefs QB Alex Smith made it clear that he would like to be back in Kansas City next year.

“I mean, are you kidding?” Smith said, via the Kansas City Star. “I signed a contract, I’m under contract for another year. So like I said, I’m not thinking about anything else. I’m obviously disappointed. I felt like we had a good chance, and it’s gone. It’s over.

A report from Saturday mentioned that the Chiefs are expected to be open to trading Smith this offseason with the Browns and Cardinals being two teams to watch (NFLTR).

Ravens

Ravens HC John Harbaugh acknowledged a few days ago that CB Jimmy Smith‘s timetable to return from a torn right Achilles might be longer and prevent him from being ready for the start of the 2018 season.

“It’s normally a six- to eight-month injury,” Harbaugh said, via the Baltimore Sun. “We saw how fast [Suggs] came back from his. But there’s always building back to your skill set, too. So we understand that. If you do the math, eight months will be September for Jimmy. That’s conservative. It’s really a little more than that. We’ll see where he’s at. I’m hopeful, but we’re going to have a bunch of corners here. So we have enough corners because you don’t know.

Harbaugh also said that he’s “all for re-signing” impending free agent DE Brent Urban.

“Brent Urban will be ready to roll if we re-sign him,” Harbaugh said. “He’s on my list. So I brought him up. I’m all for re-signing Brent Urban.

Titans

Before Saturday’s game against the Chiefs, a report surfaced that it was still a possibility that the Titans could fire HC Mike Mularkey, even though he had got them into the postseason.

After beating the Chiefs, Mularkey was about the reports regarding him possibly being fired, which he referred to as “ridiculous.”

“I don’t think it’s fair to my family,” Mularkey said, via ESPN.com. “When it has an effect on my family, it has an effect on me. So it had a big effect on me.”

Mularkey added that he hasn’t received any support to make him think he would be back with the team.

“I haven’t had any support to say I was,” Mularkey said. “I just assumed the worst.”

Titans QB Marcus Mariota spoke highly of how Mularkey has handled all of this.

“Coach Mularkey had done an incredible job of handling this entire situation, and I think he’s done a great job of keeping this team together, keeping us focused on our task at hand,” Mariota said. “He’s done a great job.”

The Titans responded Sunday by announcing that he will return as the team’s head coach in 2018.
