AFC Rumors: Browns, Chiefs, Dolphins

Browns

  • Mary Kay Cabot believes the Browns should still use the No. 1 overall pick on a quarterback prospect, even if they sign a free agent quarterback this offseason.
  • Cabot says that the ideal scenario for Cleveland would be to get their quarterback at No. 1 overall and then have their pick of Penn State RB Saquon Barkley and Alabama DB Minkah Fitzpatrick at No. 4 overall.
  • According to Cabot, Josh McCown, A.J. McCarron, Nick Foles, Case Keenum and Sam Bradford are all likely to be on the Browns’ radar this offseason as potential options at quarterback.
  • According to Tony Pauline of DraftAnalyst.com, the Browns are not presently enamored with any of the top quarterbacks in this year’s draft class.

Chiefs

  • The Chiefs traded CB Marcus Peters and a 2018 sixth-round pick to the Rams for a 2018 fourth-round pick and a 2019 2nd-round pick. (NFLTR)
  • Ian Rapoport explains that the two parties viewed this as a “mutual parting” with the Chiefs planning to move on from Peters for the past two months.
  • According to Rapoport, there was a limited market for Peters that consisted of two teams and the Chiefs ultimately took the best offer they had for him.
  • Even though Peters has ties to Colts GM Chris Ballard and Browns GM John Dorsey, Rapoport says that neither was seriously involved.
  • Adam Caplan reports that David Amerson‘s new one-year deal with the Chiefs includes $500,000 fully guaranteed and paid out in the form of a signing bonus, a $1 million base salary, $625,000 in per-game roster bonuses, and $125,000 in workout bonuses.

Dolphins

  • Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins have “strongly considered” releasing RT Ja’Wuan James and this option remains in play.
  • However, Jackson points out that there’s a weak tackle market this year, which means it’s unlikely they would be able to re-sign James if they release him.
  • Jackson adds that Miami doesn’t appear to be comfortable paying him the $9.3 million he would earn under his fifth-year option.
  • Beyond that, Jackson says that the Dolphins don’t believe their offensive tackle play suffered after James was lost for the season due to a hamstring injury.
  • Miami reportedly believes Jesse Davis can start at guard or tackle for them.
  • Jackson adds that if the Dolphins don’t keep James or sign a free agent such as Justin Pugh or Cameron Fleming, they will probably need to draft an offensive tackle.
