AFC West Notes: Broncos, Chargers, Raiders

Broncos

Broncos executive VP John Elway told reporters on Thursday that second-year QB Chad Kelly deserves a shot to be the team’s second-string quarterback.

“I had a feeling he would play well,” Elway said, via Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic. “He’s a competitive guy. He’s played a lot of snaps. He’s instinctive. He took advantage of the opportunity that he had. He was looking forward to going out and playing and champing at the bit. It did not surprise me at all the way he played. He played very well, and he’s got good instincts. He deserves a chance to play with the twos this week.”

Chargers

Chargers HC Anthony Lynn says that kicking competition between Caleb Sturgis and Roberto Aguayo is “so close right now.”

I’d love to make the decision sooner than later,” Lynn said, via Los Angeles Times. “I really would. But it’s so close right now.

Raiders

Raiders HC Jon Gruden offered some high praise for QB Derek Carr and says he already has the offense “mastered.”

“I think he’s one of the best, in terms of processing information,” Gruden said of Carr, via Scott Bair of NBC Sports Bay Area. “I think he craves new things. He wants more. . . . ‘What do we have today? What are we doing today? What’s new? What do we got?’ He has a photographic memory. It comes so easy to him. He’s got the offense mastered more than I do.”
