AFC West Notes: Broncos, Derek Carr, Raiders

Broncos

Broncos HC Vance Joseph told reporters that the decision to cut QB Chad Kelly simply came down to what was best for him and the organization.

“We thought it was the best thing for the Broncos and for Chad,” Joseph said, via Pro Football Talk. “That’s our job. It’s to figure out the best thing for the football team. That’s why it was done.”

According to Joseph, they will move forward with Kevin Hogan as the backup to Case Keenum.

“Kevin is the backup right now,” Joseph said. “We’ll see as time progresses here.”

  • Mike Klis reports that the Bills were trying to sign WR Isaiah McKenzie off of the Broncos practice squad before Denver promoted him to their active roster.

Derek Carr

  • According to Albert Breer, a lot of people around the NFL believe Derek Carr is a “tough fit” for Gruden’s complex West Coast offense and is instead more of a spread quarterback.
  • Breer doesn’t think Gruden has made any decisions about 2019 or 2020 at this point in time regarding Carr.

Raiders

Regarding the Raiders trading WR Amari Cooper to the Cowboys during practice, HC Jon Gruden said it was “uncomfortable” but trades are “unexpected and untimely” around the trade deadline.

It was an uncomfortable thing. It’s not the first time I’ve seen it. It’s not the last time I’ve seen it. … It is the trade deadline looming and sometimes trades happen that are unexpected and untimely,” said Gruden, via Scott Bair.

  • Ian Rapoport isn’t sure that the Raiders are done making trades before the deadline, despite Jon Gruden’s recent comments.
  • Rapoport tosses out S Karl Joseph and DE Bruce Irvin as two players worth watching.
  • However, Rapoport doesn’t think Raiders are willing to trade QB Derek Carr or their interior offensive linemen.
