AFC West Notes: Chargers, Chiefs, Raiders

Chargers

Chargers HC Ken Whisenhunt referred to C Mike Pouncey as a “tremendous get” by the front office this offseason.

“He’s a good football player,” Whisenhunt said, via Chargers.com. “That was really a tremendous get by our guys, Tom [Telesco] and his staff. To be able to pull that off was fantastic. I’ve seen him for a number of years, and he’s obviously a very good center. He brings a lot to the table from that standpoint.

Whisenhunt added that he believed Pouncey will fit in well with QB Philip Rivers.

Philip does a lot of things, and he always has,” Whisenhunt said. “Mike came in here and said he wants to be involved with that. That’s a good mentality for him [and] I think the communication between those two is very important. Mike’s been doing it, he’s very good at what he does from the standpoint of how he plays the game. The communication between those two will be good, and hopefully that can only make us better.”

Raiders

Raiders HC Jon Gruden was asked about rookie DT Maurice Hurst and the concerns about his heart condition.

“I’m not going to answer any more health questions on Hurst,” Gruden said, via Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “I realize there’s a lot of ghost stories out there about unnamed sources . . . I hope you just judge him on the field. He’s been cleared medically, and I’ll just leave it at that.”

Hurst added that he has “no concerns at all” about Hurst’s heart.
