Alex Smith Expects To Be Back In SF

So far, Jim Harbaugh has made it clear that he expects to have Alex Smith back as his quarterback come next season. Mindi Bach of CSNBayArea.com reports that the Smith told reporters that he expects to be back with the 49ers. Smith did however request that he not be quoted regarding the matter.

This is the first that we’ve heard from Smith regarding a possible return to San Francisco. The 2010 season ended poorly for the 49ers and Smith and it seemed as though he would be testing the free agent market at some during the offseason. Harbaugh has seemed set on keeping Smith and even reached out to him multiple times leading up to the draft.

San Francisco 49er fans may not be happy to have another season of Alex Smith but retaining him would give them a shot at competing in the leagues worst division next season. Keeping Smith will also buy them some time with Colin Kaepernick who will miss some valuable offseason practices with the team while the lockout is still in place. Even if he was healthy and OTA’s were starting, Kaepernick isn’t going to be able to step in and win games for them from the start.
