Anthony Spencer Likely Playing Final Season for Dallas Cowboys

ESPN Dallas’ Tim MacMahon speculates that the 2013 season will likely be defensive end Anthony Spencer‘s final campaign with the Dallas Cowboys.

Spencer, 29, has agreed to halt talks about a contract extension with the organization prior to July 15’s deadline to work out new paper. It  appears that Spencer will play the upcoming season under the franchise tag.

As a tagged player last season, Spencer made $8.8 million. With the tag in 2013, his salary will be $10.6 million.

The Cowboys have a very small amount of financial wiggle room as it is. If they decide to cut ties with Spencer should a long-term deal be nonnegotiable, it might be in the team’s best interest. Spencer is a year away from being on the wrong side of 30 and franchise tags are incredibly expensive for high salary position players.

We have Spencer listed as the No. 25 player in our Top 50 – 2014 Free Agents list.
