Baltimore Cuts Todd Heap, Derrick Mason & Kelly Gregg

Continuing with their roster overhaul, Jamison Hensley reports that the Baltimore Ravens have made the decision to release TE Todd Heap, WR Derrick Mason and DT Kelly Gregg. We posted earlier that the Ravens informed RB Willis McGahee that he’ll be released as well. The moves should save them a total of $18.6 million for the upcoming season.

The decision to cut Mason is a little surprising but at 37 his best years are not ahead of him. He’ll still have some value even on the open market but I wouldn’t expect a very hot market for his services.

At 31 Heap has been effected by injuries in recent years which has contributed to the decline in his overall ability. There’s still a chance that he could be brought back at a lower salary but he should garner some interest from other teams so we’ll have to see how this plays out.

With that kind of money they could actually be players in the Nnamdi Asomugha sweepstakes.
