Bears LB Lance Briggs Requests A Trade

Vaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune reports that Chicago Bears LB Lance Briggs has requested to be traded our of Chicago.

The Bears made their decision, now I have to make mine,” said Briggs.  “It’s just how the business works.  It’s not going to take away from what I do on the field.”

Briggs added that “I’m 100 percent a Bear, until I’m not a Bear anymore.”

Three years ago Briggs hit the open market and vowed to leave Chicago only to sign a six year deal with the Bears. Briggs is currently in year four of his six year deal but feels that he should be paid more as other linebackers have surpassed his current contract totals.

Who doesn’t want a new contract?” coach Lovie Smith told the Tribune.  “All of us would want a new contract.  But still, you go to work every day and do your job, and that’s what he’s doing.  I have no complaints about him.”

This is situation is likely going to be a distraction throughout the 2011 season for the Bears are they’re most likely not going to trade their best outside linebacker before the start of the season.
