Bears Place RB Jacquizz Rodgers On I.R. & Sign RB Antone Smith

The Chicago Bears announced Monday that they’re placing RB Jacquizz Rodgers placed on season-ending injured reserve with arm fracture.

  • The Bears also signed RB Antone Smith to a contract to replace Rodgers.

Chicago will move forward with Matt Forte and fourth-round pick Jeremy Langford as their top-two running backs for the remainder of the season.

Rodgers, 25, signed a one-year, $785,000 contract with the Bears as a free agent back in late March.

His 2015 season ends with him rushing for 41 yards on 14 carries (2.9 YPC) to go along with one reception for 10 yards receiving and no touchdowns.

Smith, 30, originally signed on with the Lions as an undrafted free agent out of Florida State back in 2009. He had brief stints with the Vikings and Texans before catching on with the Falcons during the 2009 season.

He wound up spending five years in Atlanta before he was released with an injury settlement at the beginning of the regular season.

Last year, Smith appeared in 10 games and ran for 144 yards on 23 carries (6.3 YPC) to go along with 13 receptions for 222 yards receiving and five total touchdowns.
