Bears Release OLB Pernell McPhee & DB Quintin Demps

The Chicago Bears announced Monday that they’ve released linebacker Pernell McPhee and defensive back Quintin Demps.

There was recent speculation that McPhee could end up being a cap casualty this offseason, so this doesn’t come as a big surprise.

McPhee, 29, is a former fifth-round pick of the Ravens back in 2011. He spent four years in Baltimore before signing a five-year, $38.75 million contract that included $15.5 million guaranteed back in 2015.

McPhee was set to make base salaries of $7.2 million and $7.625 million over the next two years.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing McPhee will free up $7,075,000 of available cap space while creating $1 million in dead money.

In 2017, McPhee appeared in 13 games for the Bears and recorded 21 tackles, four sacks, a forced fumble and two pass defenses.

Demps, 32, is a former fourth-round pick of the Eagles back in 2008. He spent just over two years in Philadelphia before he was cut at the start of the 2010 season and later signed on with the Texans.

After that, Demps played for the Chiefs and Giants before returning to the Texans in August of 2015. The Texans later brought him back on a one-year deal worth $1.5 million last year.

Demps departed Houston for a three-year, $13.5 million contract that included $1.5 million guaranteed with the Bears last March. He was set to make base salaries of $3 million and $4 million over the next two years.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Demps will free up$3,260,416 of available cap space while creating $666,667 in dead money.

In 2017, Demps appeared in three games and recorded 12 tackles and no interceptions or pass defenses.
