Bears Request Permission To Interview Steve Wilks & John DeFilippo

Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports that the Bears have requested permission to interview Panthers DC Steve Wilks for their head coach position.

  • According to Mike Garafolo, the Bears are setting up an interview with Eagles QB coach John DeFilippo for later this week.

Wilks is a pretty popular candidate, as other teams including the Colts and Giants have also requested to speak to him.

A number of reports have said that the Bears will likely target an offensive-minded coach over the next few weeks, but it appears as though they’re at least open to meeting with defensive coordinators.

Wilks, 48, began his NFL coaching career with the Bears as their defensive backs coach back in 2006. He spent two years with the Chargers before following Ron Rivera to Carolina as their defensive backs coach. The Panthers promoted him to assistant head coach in 2015 and then to defensive coordinator last year after Sean McDermott took the Bills’ job.

DeFilippo, 39, began his NFL coaching career with the Giants back in 2005 as an offensive quality control coordinator. He had brief stints with the Raiders and Jets before the Browns hired him as their offensive coordinator in 2015.

Unfortunately, DeFilippo lasted just one year in Cleveland before he was fired. The Eagles hired him as their QBs coach the following year.

We’ll have more regarding the Bears’ search as the news is available.
