Update:

Chicago as officially announced the contract extension for C Roberto Garza.

Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports that the Chicago Bears have signed veteran C Roberto Garza to a one-year contract extension on Friday.

  • Biggs adds that he still expects Chicago to add a young center to pair with Garza next season.

Garza, 35, signed a one-year contract worth $1.5 million with the Bears back in February and would have been an unrestricted free agent in the coming months.

He has appeared in 11 games for the Bears this season and has played a total of 703 snaps. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 21 center in the league out of 40 qualifying players, but he still has a negative rating due to his struggles in pass protection.

It will be interesting to see if Chicago tries to bring back Brian De La Puente, who will be an unrestricted free agent next March, as he played well this season in a limited amount of playing time.
