Bears Sign Five Players Including OL Matt McCants & DB John Franklin, Cut Four

The Chicago Bears announced Monday that they’ve signed WR Matt Fleming, DB John Franklin, DB Tyrin Holloway, OL Jeremi Hall and OL Matt McCants to contracts.

The Bears also placed OL Travis Averill, OL Cameron Lee, LB Howard Jones and LB Nyles Morgan on waivers.

McCants, 28, is a former sixth-round pick of the Giants back in 2012. He lasted just over a year in New York before he was waived at the start of the 2013 and signed to the Raiders’ practice squad.

In total, McCants spent over three years in Oakland before he was waived in 2016 and later claimed by the Browns. McCants’ stay in Cleveland was limited to just a few weeks before he was once again claimed off of waivers, this time by the Bears.

The Browns did, however, bring McCants back last year but they later placed him on injured reserve in August and eventually cut him loose with an injury settlement.

In 2016, McCants was active for four games and played a total of 38 snaps, according to Pro Football Focus.

Franklin III actually began his college career at Florida State before he transferred to East Mississippi Community College after the 2014 season. He later enrolled at Auburn before transferring to FAU last season.

While Franklin III played wide receiver and quarterback during his college career, the Bears had him listed at defensive back on the minicamp roster.

During his one season at FAU, Franklin III rushed for 229 yards on 16 carries to go along with seven receptions for 95 yards receiving and three total touchdowns over the course of 11 games.
