Bears Sign Veteran DL Mitch Unrein, Release DL Lavar Edwards

Update:

The Chicago Bears announced the signing of veteran DL Mitch Unrein on Friday, as well as the release of DL Lavar Edwards, per Brad Biggs.

Edwards, 25, is a former fifth-round pick of the Titans back in 2013. Tennessee later traded him to the Cowboys for a conditional seventh round pick. Edwards wound up making the 53-man roster last year, but was later placed on waivers in October before ending up on their practice squad.

Dallas later elected to sign him to a future/reserve contract in January. However, he was waived yesterday after they traded for RB Christine Michael

Oakland claimed Edwards off of waivers from the Cowboys in recent weeks, but wound up waiving him to make room for OLB Aldon Smith, who signed a one-year deal with the team.

Chicago signed him to a contract a little over a week ago.

In 2014, Edwards appeared in just four games and recorded only a single tackle.

Ian Rapoport reports that former Chargers DL Mitch Unrein is flying to Chicago and is expected to sign with the Bears.

  • According to Rapoport, Unrean is expected to help them immediately.

It’s worth mentioning that Bears HC John Fox worked with Unrein while they were both in Denver with the Broncos.

Unrein, 28, signed a two-year, $1.9 million contract with the Chargers back in March. However, he was released by the Charger earlier today to make room for TE Kyle Miller, who was signed to a contract.

In 2014, Unrein appeared in eight games and recorded just a single tackle for the Broncos. Pro Football Focus has him down for playing just 46 total snaps last year.
