Bears Trade DE Jared Allen To Panthers For Conditional 6th-Rd Pick

Update:

The Chicago Bears have announced their trade that will send DE Jared Allen to the Panthers for a 2016 sixth-round pick.

Bears GM Ryan Pace said of the trade: “We had some depth at the linebacker position and were able to reach an agreement with the Panthers. Whether it is acquiring additional picks or signing players, we will continue to be aggressive in finding ways to improve. We appreciate Jared’s contributions and wish him the best in Carolina.

Chris Mortensen reports that the Bears will receive a 2016 conditional sixth-round draft in return for Allen.

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports is reporting that the Chicago Bears have agreed to trade veteran DE Jared Allen to the Panthers.

  • Glazer adds that the Panthers will be sending the Bears a sixth-round pick in return for Allen.
  • According to Glazer, the Panthers were looking for a pass-rusher and Allen clearly wasn’t a fit in the Bears’ 3-4 defense.
  • Adam Schefter reports that the Bears had been shopping Allen around for a few weeks before completing this trade.

Joe Person mentions that this is a clear sign that the Panthers are concerned about DE Charles Johnson’s hamstring injury and their pass rush in general.

Allen, 33, signed a four-year, $32 million contract that included $15.5 million guaranteed with the Bears back in March of last year. He stands to make a base salary of  $1 million in 2015 to go along with $8 million in 2016 and 2017.

Field Yates points out that Allen has no guaranteed money beyond 2015 and is due just $823,529 more this year.

Chicago will have paid Allen over $11 million for three games and walked away with a late-round draft pick. However, the Bears are clearly trying to clear future cap room, as they continue to overhaul their roster.

This season, Allen has appeared in three games and recorded five tackles, one interception, and a pass defense for the Bears. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 11 outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense out of 47 qualifying players.
