Bears Tried To Sign Packers OLB Mike Neal In Free Agency

Packers OLB Mike Neal told the Chicago Tribune that the Bears made a run at him in free agency.

“They offered me,” Neal said. “In the long run, their offer, it wasn’t a bad deal. The option for me to come back here was better, in my opinion. I felt like this was a system that if I was kept in the same position, I could flourish in. I thought it would be better to try to capitalize on what I did last year here.

Chicago was clearly focused on improving their pass rush from the defensive end position. They reportedly had a great deal of interest in Michael Bennett, who ultimately elected to re-signing with the Seahawks.

The Bears did come away with potential Hall of Fame DE Jared Allen and Lamarr Houston. They also added former Lions DE Willie Young as well.

Neal, 26, ultimately signed a two-year, $8 million contract that included a $2.5 million signing bonus with the Packers.

He produced five sacks, 49 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble for Green Bay while making a tough transition to outside linebacker last year.
