Pompei notes that out of twenty-eight wide receivers taken last year and two wound up starting in week one. The two that started (A.J. Green and Julio Jones) were both top-six picks in last year’s draft. Pompei adds that just “five rookies made more than four starts” in 2011.
Chicago traded up for the South Carolina receiver, but Pompei sees him an unfinished product that needs more time to develop. Jeffrey may not get the start in week one, but it’s hard to completely rule out anything at this point in time. Hester has under-performed when given the opportunity to be a significant contributor in the past, so Jeffrey will eventually get his shot.
