Bears Unlikely To Start Alshon Jeffery Week 1?

Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune would be “stunned” if the the Bears were starting second-round pick WR Alshon Jeffery over WR Devin HesterĀ for week one of the upcoming season.

Pompei notes that out of twenty-eight wideĀ receiversĀ taken last year and two wound upĀ starting in week one. The two that started (A.J. GreenĀ and Julio Jones) were both top-six picks in last year’s draft. Pompei adds thatĀ just “five rookies made more than four starts” in 2011.Ā

Chicago traded up for the South Carolina receiver, but Pompei sees him an unfinished product that needs more time to develop. Jeffrey may not get the start in week one, but it’s hard to completely rule out anything at this point in time. Hester hasĀ under-performedĀ when given theĀ opportunityĀ to be a significantĀ contributorĀ in the past, soĀ Jeffrey will eventually get his shot.

  1. While Jeffery may not ‘start’ week one, it will certainly be Earl Bennett playing oppo Marshall with Hester, Devin Thomas or even Eric Weems in the slot… Jeffery will likely be used in at the very least red zone snaps…
