Bears Worked Out Four Players

According to Howard Balzer, the Chicago Bears brought in four free agents for tryouts on Tuesday including TE Josiah Price, TE Beau Sandland, TE Colin Thompson and WR Rodney Smith.

Of this group, the Bears elected to sign Thompson to their practice squad.

Smith, 27, originally signed on with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent out of Florida State back in 2013. He bounced on and off their practice squad before being claimed by the Browns.

Smith caught on with the Cowboys practice squad last year before signing with the Seahawks at the start of the 2016 season. Smith returned to Seatle during the preseason but wound up being among their final roster cuts.

Smith last appeared in four games for the Browns back in 2014 but yet to record a statistic.

Sandland, 24, was selected in the seventh round of this year’s NFL draft by the Panthers. He was, unfortunately, unable to make the 53-man roster coming out of the preseason and was later signed to the team’s practice squad.

Carolina elected to cut him loose from their practice squad back in November of last year and he later signed on to the Packers’ taxi squad. Green Bay brought Sandland back on a future/reserve contract this past January.

Unfortunately, Sandland was waived with an injury designation and later reverted to the Packers’ injured reserve list. Green Bay waived him with a settlement a few weeks later.

During his senior season at Montana State, Sandland caught 37 passes for 632 yards (17.1 YPR) and nine touchdowns.
