Belief Browns GM John Dorsey Will Try To Hire New Head Coach

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that the “persistent sense” in NFL circles right now is that new Browns GM John Dorsey will attempt to hire his own head coach, even though owner Jimmy Haslam has said Hue Jackson will return for the 2018 season.

Florio adds that an 0-16 season for the Browns is likely only going to make Dorsey’s case more persuasive next year.

According to Florio, it remains to be seen who Dorsey would have interest in hiring as a replacement, but the belief is that he already knows who he would hire.

Here’s the statement from Haslam from Thursday when he announced that Jackson would be returning for another season: “Hue Jackson will remain our coach and will return for the 2018 season, but we feel it is necessary to take significant steps to strengthen our personnel department.”

Jackson has come under a lot of criticism for his handling of the team, particularly the quarterback position in which he was swapping guys in and out earlier in the season before settling on DeShone Kizer as their starter.

Jackson, 52, was hired as the Browns head coach in 2016 after spending a few years as the Bengals’ offensive coordinator. Jackson has led to the Browns to a record of 1-28 (3.4 percent) since taking the job.
