Bengals HC Marvin Lewis Does Not Expect Extension This Offseason

Bengals HC Marvin Lewis mentioned that he does not expect a contract extension prior to the start of the regular season.

I don’t anticipate anything happening,” Lewis said, via Katherine Terrell of ESPN.

Lewis added that he really isn’t thinking about the situation right now, nor is owner Mike Brown.

“It’s not really a subject that’s on my mind,” Lewis said. “I don’t think it’s on Mike’s mind either. I’ve gone into many seasons without a new contract. It’s not a focus for me.”

Back in January, Lewis said that he was hopeful to sign an extension at some point this offseason. However, it now appears he’ll be allowed to enter the final year of his contract.

“We’d like to agree to something at some point,” Lewis said, via Jim Owczarski of the Cincinnati Enquirer. “It puts, I think, everybody’s mind at ease going forward for their futures. A lot of the people in the building, it makes it easier on them.”

Jason La Canfora previously mentioned that the Bengals allow Lewis to enter a lame-duck season and possibly have him transition to a front-office position with the team.

One internal option to eventually replace Lewis could be defensive coordinator Paul Guenther, who is highly thought of by Brown and the organization as a whole.

Lewis, 58, was hired as the Bengals’ head coach back in 2003 and has spent 14 seasons with the team. The expectations were for the Bengals to continue their string of playoff appearances but they’ve already clinched a losing season for the first time since 2010.

In total, the Bengals are 117-103-3 (53.1 percent) under Lewis, which includes seven trips to the postseason but no playoff wins.

We’ll have more regarding Lewis’ future with the Bengals as the news is available.
