Bengals May Reduce LB Rey Maualuga’s Playing Time Once He’s Healthy

Cole Harvey of ESPN.com mentions that the Bengals could end up reducing LB Rey Maualuga playing time once he’s healthy due to the superb play of backup LB Vinny Rey.

Maualuga is currently out with a sprained the MCL in his left knee that he suffered against the Jets back in Week 8.

“I know my strengths and what I can do. In that area, I’m not worried,” Maualuga said. “I can only control what I can, see where I am and what they have me doing.

Since Maualuga went down, Rey has been extremely productive for the Bengals defense totaling 30 tackles, three sacks and an interception in just three games.

The Bengals re-signed Maualuga to a two-year contract worth $6.5 million, which included a $2.25 million signing bonus back in March.

Maualuga has been pretty good against the run this season, but Rey’s ability to make big plays and get to the quarterback is enticing enough for the team to at the very least carve out a larger role for him moving forward.
